Dear UB1 community,

Where did the summer go? Tennis and swimming lessons, aquafit and lane swim are over for the season. But we still have lots to look forward to. Carnival Night is still on tonight (please see the update later in the newsletter), and the Ice Cream Truck Event and the Adult Party will take place during week 9. Please check the Facebook Page<\/a> for updates if the weather is not looking great! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pool News<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those children who participated in UB1 Land Swimmers, please pick up your prizes at the pool office this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are running the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross course in the morning this week (August 28th-September 1st) so the pool will be closed in the mornings. Free swim will start at 1:00 pm Monday-Friday. As the sun is setting earlier, guards may ask swimmers to get out of the pool earlier than 8:30 if they determine visibility is poor. Thank you for understanding so we can ensure everyone\u2019s safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Labour Day weekend the pool will open at noon. On Saturday and Sunday the pool will close at 8:00pm. On Monday, the pool will close at 6:00pm. Monday, September 4th is the last day the pool will be open this season. The tennis and basketball courts will remain open into the Fall for member enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This season marks the end of an era for UB1. Lia Heard, our wonderful pool manager, will be leaving UB1 after 7<\/strong> years on staff. She has held many positions over the years including Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Lifesaving Instructor, Activity Coordinator and Manager. Lia is going into her last year of teacher’s college for Junior\/Intermediate (grades 4-10) and is hoping to apply to teaching jobs in the KW\/Guelph areas and around Ottawa and do some supply work next summer. Although she is sad to leave UB1, she is excited for the next chapter and leaves us with the following sentiments:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am very appreciative that working at UB1 has guided me to pursue teaching, something I am super excited and passionate about. I am very grateful for being able to work at UB1 as I consider it to be the best summer job I could have asked for! Looking back, I am grateful for the amazing community, staff and the growth\/learning I have seen in myself and others while working here. I will miss all the wonderful smiling faces next summer. I might have to drop in and say hello next year!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thank you, Lia, for your hard work and dedication to UB1 over the past 7 years. Good luck with your teaching career!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A big thank you to the rest of our fabulous pool staff as well for an amazing season. Please stop by the pool this week to thank Lia, Ailidh, Aaron, Aidan, Ben, Cooper, Jamie, Justyna, Tyler, Emma and Izzy for teaching and keeping us all safe this summer. We are hoping to see some of you back next summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social and Community<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Carnival<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carnival is still on from 5:00 to 7:30 tonight!  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bouncy castle company has notified us that they will not be setting up the bouncy castle due to the wet ground. But we still have many fun activities, such as face paint, balloon animals, games, team challenges and more! We will be running pool games and bike decorating (temporary\/removable decorations like streamers, basket decor and more)! Please bring a bathing suit if you want to play pool games! And a floaty\/adult if needed! Bring a bike and a lock if you want to do bike decorating! We hope to see you there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ice Cream Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UB1 will be hosting the fourth annual Ice Cream Truck event on Wednesday, August 30th from 5:30pm to 8:00pm <\/strong>as the pool season comes to a close.\u00a0 Classic ice cream truck will deliver ice cream to our members and associates from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.\u00a0 Please see the map at the end of the newsletter sent on August 24th showing when the ice cream truck will make its stops. Associates are welcome to come to the UB1 stop at 5:30pm or to find the ice cream truck on route. It is a great way to get out and see your neighbours while enjoying a frozen treat!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More information about tickets will be provided shortly. The event is being subsidized by UB1. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adult Party<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please join us for our annual adult party on Wednesday, August 30th. <\/strong>The party will be held between 8:00pm to 11:00pm. <\/strong>The pool deck will be lit up with lights and we promise a fun night! Have a fireside chat with friends and neighbours or dance into the night with live music from the fabulous Silvia D and the Boyfriend (back by popular demand). There will be beer and wine, and snacks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Check out the <\/strong>The Sun Life Waterloo Busker Carnival<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>this weekend. <\/strong>The Carnival runs from August 24th to August 27th and is celebrating its 35th year. The Carnival brings the best international artists in the world to UpTown Waterloo for four days, featuring acrobatics, comedians, magicians, and fire breathers. Prepare to laugh and be amazed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Bienkowski, UB1 Treasurer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Steve and his wife, Theresa, have lived in the UB1 neighbourhood for 10 years. As Steve tells the story, Theresa saw the UB1 email to members asking for a volunteer for the Treasurer position and she suggested that it would be a good role for Steve. Steve paid the favour back by roping Theresa into distributing membership invoices back when the invoices were delivered by hand. While Theresa is active on the UB1 tennis courts, Steve rarely, if ever, uses the UB1 facilities. However, as a numbers guy, he understands the value that UB1 provides for the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve joined the UB1 board in 2016 to carry on the tradition of neighbours helping neighbours. He adeptly manages the UB1 financials, including payroll and insurance, and serves as an excellent counsel for the UB1 Board of Directors. Steve has streamlined processes over the past several years and we have him to thank for ensuring UB1 is in a good financial position for years to come. Steve, a C.P.A.\/C.A., retired in 2020 as COO of the Kitchener Rangers. He has won several awards for his community service.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve is planning to step down as UB1 Treasurer role after volunteering for 7 years so we are hoping there is another Steve (or Theresa) in the UB1 community who can help us fill this important role. If you are able to get involved in your UB1 community by volunteering your time and skills, please contact Monica Heinrich, President<\/a>, for more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
