Pool News

Session 2 swimming lesson sign up for the four weeks in August will start at 4pm on Tuesday, July 27th. It will be held in person only on the basketball court. In-person sign up allows the guards to explain the lesson format and swimming levels, and assess demand. Please visit the UB1 website for swimming guidelines and rules for lessons. If you have questions about swimming lessons, please contact the pool staff at ub1guards@gmail.com

UB1 is introducing stroke correction and providing swimming workouts for those who are interested during adult swim on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm.

Please see the Week Four Activities section below for the pool activities.

Tennis and Pickleball News

Junior Tennis Lessons

Sign-up for Session 3 of Junior Tennis Lessons can be found here. This sign-up is for the weeks of August 3rd to August 13th. We have found doing the sign-up in two week blocks allows us to maximize the number of lessons each kid can receive. Please fill out the form by Thursday July 29th. Monday August 2nd is a Stat Holiday and there will be no lessons that day.

Although we have entered Stage 3 in the Provincial Re-opening Plan, we have decided to continue to have a maximum of 8 kids in each lesson. This number facilitates physical distancing and behaviour management within the class.

Teen Tennis Lessons

Head tennis instructor, Grady is running a free one hour lesson for UB1 Teens who have no-to-little experience with tennis. This lesson will run Thursday July 29th from 6pm. Please email Grady at gradysimpson4@gmail.com to sign up. We will cap the lesson at 8 teens to facilitate physical distancing. If interest exceeds our class capacity, Grady will plan to run another class later on. A COVID screen is required prior to joining the lesson that evening.

Social Events

We had a small but enthusiastic crowd for our first movie night of the year. Thank you to all those who attended. We look forward to seeing all of you at our next movie night on August 25th when we will be screening another Hollywood classic, Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window.  Mark your calendars!

Yoga Night – Wednesday, July 28st – 7:00pm
Join us on the basketball court for an hour yoga lesson on July 28th. The cost is a $5 drop-in fee payable to the instructor. Please bring your mat, water bottle and bug spray if it is buggy. Please see the UB1 calendar to register for July 28th.

Online Cooking Class with Relish Culinary Institute – Thursday, July 29th – 6:30pm
Learning how to cook with seasonal ingredients is a great way to enjoy the flavours of the summer. Join Professional Home Economist, best selling cookbook author and co-owner of Relish Cooking Studio, Donna-Marie Pye as you learn to make a fun and easy summer dish that’s perfect to serve as an easy summer dinner. We’ll start by roasting tomatoes in the oven to create a delicious topping, then make some light and fluffy vegetarian fritters filled with zucchini and corn. You also make a quick summer sauce with fresh herbs and yogurt to serve alongside.  This simple approach to cooking good food is what makes seasonal cooking an easy and approachable experience.

This is a no cost event and is sure to be a lot of fun, please sign up and an ingredient list and zoom invite will be sent to you shortly.

Keep checking the UB1 website event calendar for other upcoming events!

Community Update

Great News! It is easier than ever for Waterloo Region residents to get a COVID-19 vaccine as appointments are no longer required. As of July 22nd all public vaccination clinics will be accepting walk-ins for both first and second doses of the vaccine. Although members of the public still have the option of scheduling an appointment, walk-ins will be welcome as long as sufficient vaccine is available at the vaccination clinic. Please see the Region of Waterloo website for more information and other COVID-related news.
