June Update

Hello UB1 Members,

Please see below for UB1 updates:

Pool

We are waiting for government restrictions to lift before we are able to open the pool – hopefully shortly after the province announces Step One. The pool has been inspected and guard training is being planned so we will be ready to open as soon as possible. We will let you know on the UB1 website and via email when the pool is opening, when and how you can sign up or walk in for free swims, and when swimming lessons sign up begins.

Tennis and Pickleball

We’re excited to have the courts up and running again for the 2021 season! Demand has been high again as people are enjoying getting outside in the lovely weather.

We have noticed that some members are signing up for the same time slot nearly every day at the same time. We would like to avoid having a strict booking guideline to address this issue and ask members to please be considerate of the prime (evening) times when they sign up in advance so that other members have a chance to sign up and play. A notice will be put up in the booking area to notify members as well.

Basketball

The basketball court is open and some fun pavement games have been added. Until COVID restrictions lift further, there is one basketball hoop ready for play. Please respect the COVID guidelines of only 5 people playing at one time. If you encounter a large group on the court, and feel comfortable approaching them, you could cite COVID guidelines as the reason for asking them to break up their game at this time. Most people are respectful of this. If you do not feel comfortable breaking it up, then please feel free to use the following contacts:

  • For COVID-related large group concerns call By-Law at 519-747-8785
  • For TRESPASSING of non members call non emergent Police at 519-570-9777

There is also a large map of public courts on the tennis court wall to which you could direct non members.

Upcoming Social Events The Social Committee has been hard at work planning a robust program schedule for summer 2021. We look forward to seeing our friends and neighbours as soon as restrictions allow. Keep an eye out for event dates and registration on the UB1 website events page and in upcoming newsletters.

  • Yoga with Eva, weekly as soon as restrictions allow
  • Sustainable Gardening Workshop with Catherine Jones, certified Climate Reality Project Leader. Join Catherine as she reviews the science of climate change, the impact it is having at home and abroad and backyard solutions we can use to increase biodiversity and decrease our carbon footprint.
  • Meditation Workshop with Amanda Weber. Join us for an evening of community and reducing stress with an Introduction to Meditation. This workshop will include a little science and some great tools to disconnect your stress response and feel more resourced to manage life. No equipment necessary, just a desire to rest and recharge for a little while.
  • Adult Pool Party
  • Adult movie nights
  • Virtual Cooking class with Relish Cooking Studios
  • Oktoberfest food truck
  • Plus two additional workshops, TBD

As always please reach out to the Social Committee Chair, Amy Walbridge at amyinwaterloo@gmail.com with any questions or comments.

Community News

Community webpage

Our UB1 website has recently been updated to include a community page. This page will act as a bulletin board for items of interest to, and for, our UB1 members. Items you might find on the community page include, but are not limited to; local babysitters or families looking for a babysitter, community events, fundraisers etc. If you would like to post something to our community page, please email Cindy at upperbeechwood1community@gmail.com

Loose leaf pick up

The City of Waterloo is contemplating cancelling loose-leaf pickup service. This would mean that residents could no longer rake their boulevard leaves to the curb in the fall and instead would have to bag all their leaves. City councillors will be discussing the matter at the June 14th council meeting.  Residents who value this service are encouraged to reach out to our city councillors at: council@waterloo.ca   As your Community Director I will do my best to keep you informed on all matters relevant to us as neighbours and residents. Feel free to reach out with your questions or concerns however, please understand I cannot get involved in matters of by-law enforcement.

We look forward to when we can see you at the pool!
