Pool News
Session 2 swimming lessons sign-up started today at 6pm. Please use the online form sent in the newsletter email on July 13th. Class Lists will be posted on Saturday, July 15th by the end of the day.
Tennis and Pickleball News
Tennis lessons are now fully underway and we have been fortunate to enjoy sunny and dry weather for a full 2 weeks now! Thank you to David who will continue to coach over the next two weeks. His helper next week will be Nathan, and then Max will be helping out the week after.
Next week’s tennis lesson schedule will be posted on Sunday once I confirm that there are no conflicts with the swim lessons. The lesson schedule will be emailed to all parents, and posted on the bulletin board. Please email upperbeechwood1tennis@gmail.com if there are any mistakes or concerns regarding the schedule for next two weeks.
Tennis lesson sign-up for July 31st and onwards is now open until Saturday July 22nd at noon. Please use the link sent in the July 13th email to sign up your children for the August tennis sessions.
Pickleball “learn to play” workshops took place this week, with Lori providing great coaching to our members. Please email upperbeechwood1tennis@gmail.com if you are interested in lessons, Lori is available most evenings with advanced notice and if 3 or 4 people are able to commit to a lesson.
On-line court bookings for members and associates are now available at tennisub1.skedda.com. Please email upperbeechwood1tennis@gmail.com if there are any issues with the system.
Social and Community
We are still looking for a yoga instructor who is available one week night a week for an hour throughout the summer to provide paid yoga instruction at UB1. If you know of someone who would be interested, please contact Cindy at upperbeechwood1community@gmail.com.
Check out the new Cipher | Decipher exhibit at the City of Waterloo Museum (located beside the food court at Conestoga Mall. It includes a rare and exciting opportunity to view an authentic Second World War Enigma cipher machine. Visitors will be able to scramble their own messages using a cipher wheel, see how an Enigma cipher machine works and tackle puzzles to learn if they have what it takes to work in the field of cryptology.
We all enjoy playing video games, but did you know the code to write these games is like learning a second language? Explore the world of coding at the family-friendly Waterloo Code Quest this Saturday, July 15th from 10:00am to 4:00pm!
The Region of Waterloo, the Social Development Centre Waterloo Region and community partners are looking for your ideas and feedback to create a plan to end chronic homelessness. Help by completing the online survey or sign up for a virtual group lab where facilitators will guide participants through information-seeking activities. Uniformed firefighters from Waterloo Fire Rescue will be knocking on doors to kick off the annual Home Smoke Alarm Campaign. After being on pause since 2019, the program will resume this year with firefighters visiting 4,500 properties across Waterloo throughout the summer and into the fall. The goal is to raise awareness about the importance of smoke alarms, home fire escape planning and carbon monoxide alarms. Do you know the rules for overnight parking in Waterloo? According to the City of Waterloo website:
Unregistered vehicles left on streets/lots between 2:30 and 6:00 a.m. will be ticketed.
If you register for an exemption, you can leave a vehicle in a legal parking spot overnight up to 15 times a year.
You have to register by 1:30 a.m. on the night of the exemption. Learn more about overnight parking
Weekly Activities
UB1 Land – The board game of challenges and swimming lengths!
Hi swimmers! Are you ready for your Scuba Missions? This summer you are challenged to swim from start to finish on our very own board game – UB1 Land! Pick up your score card in the guard office to start swimming laps and completing weekly Scuba Missions to win a prize at the end of the summer.
Week 3’s Mission can be found on the bulletin board! Remember to show the guards you have completed the mission to get a sticker for your UB1 land scorecard.
Halloween – Dress up and get some candy
If you missed Halloween due to the weather you can still show off your costume to the guards to get some candy and a Halloween craft. All you have to do is ask the guard in the office!
Family Night
A new event this year for the whole family to replace Movie Night! Come out to Family Night on Thursday, July 20th at 7pm UB1! We are going to have lots of family-friendly games with the theme, Zoo Night! We will have some animal crafts and face painting with some family-oriented game! Fun for the whole family, don’t miss out!
Synchro Camp
Who wants to be a synchro swimmer?! Synchro camp runs on Monday July 17, Tuesday July 18, and Wednesday July 19th from 1:00-2:00 pm, with our final performance at 7pm on Wednesday. Come to the pool to learn an awesome synchro routine to a trendy song!
