Dear UB1 community,
Please see below for pool and tennis/pickleball news, and what’s on in the community. Plus a whole bunch of activities planned for week 4 of summer at UB1 including a fire truck visit, Science Night, swim team skills, and the annual junior and senior swim meets!
Reminder to please pay attention to the no parking zones indicated by the no parking signs at UB1. This area needs to remain open for emergency vehicles.
Pool News
Session 3 swimming lessons sign-up will start Thursday July 27th at 6:00 pm. The form will close on Saturday July 29th at 10:00 am. After this you can still enroll but there is no guarantee for your preferred level. Please use the form sent in the email newsletter on July 20th to sign up. Class Lists will available on Saturday, July 26th by the end of the day.
We are looking for swim meet volunteers for Thursday, July 27th from 3:00 pm-7:00 pm to help run the senior swim meet at UB1. Please email ub1guards@gmail.com if you are interested.
Tennis and Pickleball News
Tennis lessons are in full swing and the weather continues to cooperate! Thank you to David who will continue to coach next week. His helper next week will be Max.
Tennis lesson sign-up for July 31st and onwards is now open, deadline is Saturday July 22nd at noon. Please use the link sent in the email newsletter on July 20th to sign up your children for the August tennis sessions.
On-line court bookings are now available. There were some temporary issues on July 20th, but they are fixed. Please email upperbeechwood1tennis@gmail.com if there are any further issues with the system.
Social and Community
Free weekly yoga at UB1 on Wednesday night! Please join certified yoga instructor, Nina, at 7:00pm in the UB1 basketball court on Wednesday evening for an hour of yoga. No experience needed. Please bring your own yoga mat or towel and wear comfortable clothes. Feel free to bring a friend or come on your own and meet new friends!
The annual Sun Life Uptown Jazz Festival is on this weekend in uptown Waterloo from Friday, July 21st to Sunday, July 23rd. It is celebrating 30 years of bringing world-class music to the Waterloo Region; 30 years of bringing the Community together!
Check out the City of Waterloo Art Market on Friday, July 28th! It features artists, crafters, and makers from the Waterloo Region selling in the Waterloo Public Square from 5:00 -9:00 pm. There will also be games and live music from 7:00 – 9:00 pm for you to listen to and enjoy while exploring all of the amazing arts and crafts.
Weekly Activities
UB1 Land – The board game of challenges and swimming lengths!
Hi swimmers! Are you ready for your Scuba Missions? Pick up your score card in the guard office to start swimming laps and completing weekly Scuba Missions to win a prize at the end of the summer.
Ready for Week 4’s Scuba Mission? Come to the guard office to pick up a scavenger hunt sheet! Complete the sheet and show a guard to get a sticker on your UB1 land scorecard!
Craft
Let’s get ready to cheer on our UB1 swimmers at the swim meets by making Tie-Dye shirts and UB1 Posters! Please bring your own white piece of cotton clothing to tie-dye. See you at 1:00pm on Monday, July 24th.
Swim Team
Come out to learn some swim racing skills with Ailidh at 1:00pm – 2:00pm from Monday, July 24th to Wednesday, July 26th. The only requirement is to have passed the swim test. We hope to see you there!
Fire Truck Visit
Come out for a Firefighter and Fire Truck visit on Tuesday, July 25th at 1:00pm – 2:00pm. Please sign up for a 20 minute time slot at the pool as only 20 kids are allowed to see the fire truck at a time. A guard will be organizing kids on the basketball court based on sign up! Thank you to the super Firefighters from the Waterloo Fire Department for giving us this awesome educational opportunity! Please note that they may be called away if there is an emergency, and we ask that you please explain this to your kids before the event!
Please note that we will be blocking off parking near the basketball courts so there is room for the fire truck.
Science Night
Join us on Tuesday, July 25th between 6:00pm – 8:30pm on the basketball courts for our Science Night! All ages are welcome as we explore different concepts of science through group experiments, demonstrations and self guided activities.We hope to see you all there. Please don’t forget to fill out the survey in the newsletter emails on July 20th so we can plan for how many people are interested!
Junior Swim Meet (Ages 4-7)
This upcoming Wednesday, July 26th, is the annual Jr. Swim Meet hosted by Upper Beechwood 2 (530 Leighland Drive) from 3:00 – 5:30pm. Meet lifeguards Ailidh and Aaron at UB1 by 2:30pm to walk together or meet us there about 3:00pm. All races will be short and a lifeguard can get in to help you out if you need the extra support. Come out and show that UB1 spirit!
Senior Swim Meet (Ages 8 & Up)
This upcoming Thursday, July 27th, is the annual Sr. Swim Meet hosted by us, Upper Beechwood, from 3:00pm – 7:00pm! We will be selling pizza, pop, snacks all for $1 with the proceeds going to charity during our dinner break. The swim meet will have 5 different race options: Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, and our two relays. You can participate in your age category and in a higher age category. We hope to see you come out and swim and/or cheer, and have some fun!
